On Sunday 22 November 2009 at 14:00, The Royal Cape Yacht Club will officially start Leg 3 of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race from Cape Town to Geraldton, Western Australia. Ten 68 foot ocean racing yachts will be leaving Cape Town, each sponsored by an international city, region or country including Hull & Humber (UK), Qingdao (China), Uniquely Singapore, Cape Breton Island (Nova Scotia, Canada), Cork (Ireland), Edinburgh Inspiring Capital (Scotland), Team Finland, Spirit of Australia, Jamaica Lightning Bolt and California (USA).
The Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race started on 13 September 2009 from the Humber on the UK’s east coast and will return there in July 2010 after 35,000 miles of ocean racing. More than 40 nationalities and 230 professions are represented by crew competing in Clipper 09-10. Crew can sign up for the whole circumnavigation or one or more legs. The overall race is divided into individual races and points are accumulated according to each individual race position. The yacht with the highest total at the finish wins the race trophy.
First run in 1996, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is the brainchild of renowned yachtsman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968/9. He wanted everyone to be able to experience the sheer exhilaration of ocean racing which, until then, had been the preserve of professionals and the privileged. More than 1,750 people have now competed in the six Clipper Races, the circumnavigators (approx 300) becoming members of an elite group of sportsmen and women.
