PHOENICIAN SHIP EXPEDITION SETS SAIL FOR CAPE WATERS
Phoenician Ship Expedition sets sail for Cape watersThe Phoenician Ship Expedition is due to arrive in Cape Town next week. Her last point of departure was East London.
The Phoenicia expedition is recreating the first circumnavigation of Africa, first accomplished by Phoenician mariners in 600BC. The Phoenician Ship Expedition launched from Arward, Syria in August 2008. The ship and 12 crew members is now setting sail for Cape Town and the ship is expected to be docked at the V&A Waterfront from Monday, 1 March depending on weather. Historians, maritime enthusiasts and the general public are invited to come visit the ship in order to help raise funds for this historical journey to continue. This journey was first conquered over 2 500 years ago when Phoenician mariners sailed into waters that had been previously considered too dangerous navigate. The construction of the replica ship was commissioned by Englishman Philip Beale who is leading this expedition to prove that Phoenicians circumnavigated Africa thousands of years before Europeans did.
